The Old House

The Old House has been a home for more than 400 years right in the heart of the village of Kingsland. Situated across from the 14th Century Church and overlooking the Millennium Green, it is in a wonderful position to enjoy village life in this quiet and rural part of Britain. Herefordshire offers a wide range of timber buildings from Medieval and Tudor times, apparently of sound construction. Not without its problems, however. It took a very interesting year to reinstate the oak frame and the wattle-and-daub panels in between. Inside, the wonderful oak floors needed a lot of attention, as did the plastered walls and ceilings. Once the fabric of the building was restored, we had new services installed and new bathrooms made for our guests. As we found the house surrounded by a very mature garden, this offers a good opportunity to enjoy life outside as well.

Working on the Old House was made quite exciting by a range of special finds, the most special one being the discovery of fragments of wall paintings in the dining room. But also, two Jacob's shells under the foundation stones, a cat buried in the chimney and pottery in the garden. All this has been a wonderful source of inspiration for us and we hope this is reflected in the quality and standard of accommodation provided.
